This 36V 12.5Ah Lithium-Ion battery with Hailong Case for Ebike has higher average voltages and higher energy density compared with lead-acid batteries. In addition, it is relatively light, easy to carry, and life is relatively long. The lithium-ion battery has superior chemical and thermal stability. A Lithium-iron battery remains cool at room temperature while the Li-ion may suffer thermal runaway and heats up faster under similar charging conditions.

The lithium-iron (LiFePo4/LFP) battery has a slight edge over the Li-ion (LiCoO2) battery for safety. This is important because a battery should not get overheated or catch fire in case of overcharging.

LFP  is a nontoxic material, but LiCoO2 is hazardous in nature, so is not considered a safe material. The disposal of Lithium-ion batteries is a big concern for the manufacturer and user.

 

Charging and discharging

During discharge, lithium ions (Li+) carry the current within the battery cell from the negative to the positive electrode, through the non-aqueous electrolyte and separator diaphragm.

During charging, an external electrical power source (the charging circuit) applies an over-voltage (a higher voltage than the battery produces, of the same polarity), forcing a charging current to flow within each cell from the positive to the negative electrode, i.e., in the invert direction of a discharge current under ordinary circumstances. The lithium ions then migrate from the positive to the negative electrode, where they become embedded in the permeable terminal material in a cycle known as intercalation.
